Things to do in Hong Kong – Visit Lamma Island and the Giant Wind Turbine
Lamma Island, long known in Hong Kong as a bastion of “hippydom”, free thinkers, layabouts, alkis and artists. Also famous for its massive POWERSTATION, and POWERSTATION BEACH PARTIES… now has a new attraction. Hong Kong Electric has installed this huge wind turbine as an experiment. Well some could say a PR exercise, but lets just go with the official version. We went to see it last Sunday and it is awesome. It makes this very “action movies’ swishing sound as it spins around, very cool. They are building an information center and picnic park on the ground where it is situated, and it is only a matter of time before the smell of barbeque meat will greet those going up to see it. Our suggestion, go now, before the main land tour groups discover it.
To get there, take the ferry to YUNG SHUE WAN, you will see it sticking out over the hilltop as the ferry docks, you have to be blind to miss it. Then follow the path through the village toward SOK KU WAN, just past the tennis court you will come to a wide concrete road, cross over this and keep going down the path until you come to the second wide concrete road, then turn left and follow this wide road (KNOW AS CABLE ROAD – 95% of Hong Kong Island Electricity is running under your feet) up the hill until you see the WIND TURBINE. Enjoy the swishing sound and marvel at Hong Kong Electric’s $15M experiment…
Any bets on how long it will take before we see the little shops along the path selling miniture wind turbines… the first person to spot one please let me know…
